hello - i'm taking about 3 weeks to explore the lake district of argentina and i'm looking for suggestions. i'd like to swim in lakes, hike in the mountains and forests, and find some fun towns/cities. is bariloche somewhere to go or avoid? how about san martin de los andes? any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. thanks, brady

parque vicente perez rosales has a nice spot to camp on the side of a beautiful lake, with vistas of volcan osorno.

i liked bariloche, for the reason that it gives you access to many amazing spots: refugio otto, where you can do a full day glacier hike with crampons; refugio frey (my best tip, a hike up from cerro catedral, the ski area. you reach a beautfil quiet lagoon, and can camp or stay at the hut. they also arrange rock climbing trips right outside the hut.)

bariloche the city itself is very touristy, but again, you can arrange rafting trips. oh also, great day hike to bosque los arrayenes, cool forest on a little island, from bariloche.

el bolson also has several refugios nearby (these are rustic mountian huts, and you can sleep there with just a sleeping bag, and hike from one to the other.)

have fun! love that part of the world, its amazing...

If you're go camping i recommend a very small place near San Martin de los Andes, it is called Quilaquina. There is a beautifull campside situated at the big lake and a small river. If you go upstream you can fish for trout, delicious on the BBQ!

A bit more to the north, very close to the chelean border there is a lake called Lago Aluminé, also very wurthwhile to visit, you can go by car to a vulcano, which you can climb without guide. It is in the nutral zone between chile and Argentina.

Bariloche is a place to go to. You can use it as a base to go climbing, rafting, hiking, horseback riding or what ever, they have got it all.

    Have a good trip.
